Target group

Master students, who have Environmental Change and Policy as the major; and doctoral students of UH. Other UH students, if space permits.

Prerequisites

B.Sc. completed in relevant major.

Learning outcomes

To become familiar with the latest research on ecosystem services and forests. Learn to understand forestry from an international perspective. Learn to influence forestry action.

Timing

2nd-4th teaching period

Contents

Definition and general characteristics of forests. Concept of ecosystem services and its relation to the production of forest derived commodities. International trade affecting forests and forestry. Forest biodiversity and the carbon budget of forests. Mountain forests sheltering against floods, landslides and avalanches. History and future prospects of forests. Research methods in forest sciences. Forest enterprises and corporations, forest organizations.

Completion

Presentation required (see above) and a classical test on writing by the end of the 4th period.

Study materials

Latest research literature available on the Internet. Weekly lectures and discussions during the 2nd to 4th study period. One new document each time for students to read and report the following week. Each student presents one document for discussion (15 min presentation + 15 min discussion).

Assessment practices and criteria

The test: 0-5.

Additional information

Teachers: professor Pekka Kauppi and a young assisting scientist, to become recruited in 2015. Classes in English, test can be done also in Finnish or Swedish.
