Style issues

  • Finnish versus Anglo-US scientific writing
  • current evolution in the style of journals in English

Clarity and formality issues

  • tense choice
  • paragraph construction, topic sentences, end focus
  • connectors and cohesion
  • punctuation
  • vocabulary: word variety, academic verbs

Information issues

  • quotations and citations
  • presenting visual information: graphs, charts and tables, and relating to them in the text

Approaching the task: steps to academic/scientific writing

Writing abstracts

  • steps to writing a complete but concise overview of your research to attract an audience at a conference and readers in a journal
  • how to formulate a title and keywords

  • introduction/terms of reference
  • presenting facts and findings
  • discussion, drawing conclusions
