After completing the course, students

  • Can use French in easy everyday situations, e.g., compose simple messages
  • Can express themselves in the past tense (the passé composé) and future tense, both orally and in writing
  • Are acquainted with the French culture and can use, e.g., the most common polite expressions
  • Understand simple speech

French for beginners 1 and 2 use the same textbook and form a continuum.

The main topics and language use situations: leisure time, weather, expressing wishes and opinions, describing people and the living environment, restaurant visits

Key structures:

  • The imperative, the passé composé, the simple past, the future tense
  • adverbial and object pronouns
  • The partitive article
  • Interrogative sentences

Structural, vocabulary and listening comprehension exercises, oral exercises in pairs, home assignments and essays, online assignments.

A teacher-instructed course, with 42 hours of contact teaching and 38 hours of independent work.

Digiversion: Textbook and excercise book, a DVD-ROM with video material and audio recordings of the textbook dialogues and texts. The product is a card, that contains the code for the digiversion and can be bought from a bookstore.

A glossary (French–Finnish–English) for the textbook chapters, as well as a brief outline of the grammar (both in Moodle), will be used as supplementary material for both the book and the digiversion.

Based on the aspects mentioned under the course objectives. Continuous evaluation: small review tests or a final examination, depending on the group, regular participation in classroom work (75%), completion of the home assignments.
