Environmental HUmanities FORUM (ALKU-305)

An independent study course on environmental humanities, combining reading, lectures, and writing of a scholarly essay.

During the academic year 2019-20, ALKU students can obtain 5 ECTS credits for ALKU-305 (Tila, paikka ja ympäristö / Space, Place, and the Environment) by reading a textbook, attending guest lectures organized by the University of Helsinki Environmental Humanities Hub, and writing an essay.

The Environmental Humanities Hub is affiliated with the Helsinki Humanities Program (HUH) https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-arts/research/helsinki-university-... and cooperates closely with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-institute-of-sustainability-science.

The Environmental Humanities Hub https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/environmental-humanities studies the multifaceted cultural and relational dimensions of anthropogenic environmental change, which is one of the most pressing challenges that humanity currently faces. Environmental humanities as an academic field of study has an indispensable role in digesting, conveying, and contextualizing the anthropogenic environmental change as a cultural and social phenomenon.

The hub aims to create an environmentally centered humanities, social sciences and arts community from across anthropology, archeology, art history, ecocriticism, energy humanities, history, indigenous studies, law, linguistics, philosophy, theology, urban studies, and associated fields. Anchored at the University of Helsinki, the Hub seeks to act as an agora for intensive interaction among foreign and Finland-based researchers and artists. Our goal is to explore human cultural knowledge and to bring a diversity of environmental discourses into dialogue over our shared planetary futures.

An important venue for this work is the guest lecture series, Environmental Humanities Forum https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/environmental-humanities/news-.... Established in January 2018, the EHF regularly features both Helsinki and visiting scholars in the field of environmental humanities. Students at all levels are welcome to attend the guest lectures and partake in the discussion.

Conduct of the course

Students can obtain 5 ECTS credits for ALKU305 by completing the following requirements:
- Read the textbook, The Environmental Humanities: A Critical Introduction, by Robert S. Emmett and David E. Nye (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2017) https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/environmental-humanities. The book is accessible in electronic format in the University of Helsinki library system at https://helka.finna.fi/Record/helka.3232116
- Attend at least five (5) EHF guest lectures. Many of these will also be available online at the EHF website. Consult https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCe--e29L_arC1lAarAXEDsA and/or
https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/environmental-humanities/media...
- Write a 20 to 25 page essay (Times New Roman, 12 pt, spacing 1½) that elaborates on the concept of environmental humanities and discusses in detail both the book and the lectures attended. For a higher grade, discuss and develop meaningful connections between the text and the lectures. How did the lectures fit into the framework provided by Emmett and Nye? What is your personal opinion on the viability of the concept of environmental humanities? What did you learn from the book and the lectures?
- Please note that while the materials are in English, you can write your essay also in Finnish/Swedish.
- Return your essay (with your name and student number) in PDF format to Prof. Mikko Saikku at mikko.saikku@helsinki.fi
- For any additional information, please contact Mikko Saikku by email. He will also be available after most EHF lectures.

Description

Opintojaksosta vastaa ALKU-maisteriohjelma.

Opintojakso kuuluu pakollisena koulutusohjelman yhteisiin opintoihin.

Opiskelija saa metodologisia valmiuksia pro gradu -työn kirjoittamiseen.

Opintojakso suositellaan suoritettavaksi maisteriopintojen 1. vuoden aikana.

Kurssi arvostellaan asteikolla 0-5. Arviointikriteerinä käytetään aktiivista osallistumista tunneille, erityisesti painotetaan analyysitaitojen ja kriittisen tulkinnan kehittymistä. Arviointimenetelminä käytetään yhdistellen muun muassa luentotenttejä, luentopäiväkirjoja, esseiden ja harjoitustehtävien kirjoittamista ja esitelmien pitämistä. Arviointimenetelmät täsmennetään toteutettavan opetuksen yhteydessä.

Place in the Spring term 2020: HELSUS Lounge, Porthania 244
