Description
Course is recommended for all students planning on completing Computer Science courses. Compulsory course for students of Bachelor’s programme in Computer Science. You can take the course as part of Digital Education For All (DEFA) studies.
No prerequisites.
To ensure that student has required practical skills for studies in Computer Science. The goal is that student learns basics of command line, using VCS (Version control systems) in simple coding project, as well as making a simple static website.
Recommended as first Computer Science course.
Course consists of three (3) parts, each containing exercises that students complete individually:
- The Command Line
- Version Control: Git and Github
- HTML and CSS
Learning goals for each can be found in course material.
The course material is completely online. The material contains practical information and exercises. In addition, searching information online is required.
The assessment is based on the number of exercises completed and an online exam.

The course is completed online:
- Study the course material and
- complete exercises found in the course material. Keep track of which exercises you have completed.
- Enroll on the course through the Open University. You can find the instructions on this page, under the section Registration and fee.
- Continue completing the course in the Moodle online environment. Moodle space for the course opens 18.1.2021.
- Mark which exercises you have completed in Moodle.
- Take the course exam in Moodle.
Moodle
The course employs the online learning environment Moodle. The Moodle space for the course is available from 18.1.2021.
You will receive the Moodle course key through email after you have completed the Open University course enrollment. (The Moodle space is also available through the Moodle button on this page. The enrolment key is also provided in the course material).
Are you a student at the University of Helsinki or another HAKA member institution.
- If yes, you can use your username and password to access Moodle.
- If not, please activate your University of Helsinki user ID and use it to access Moodle. You will receive information regarding the user ID through email after your course enrollment.
Exam
You can complete the online exam either
- halfway through the course (15.2. - 7.3.2021) or
- at the end of the course (19.4. - 9.5.2021).
The exam is available for three (3) weeks on each occasion.
If you need some special arragements or support for the examination, contact your education specialist at least 10 days beforehand.
For special arrangements, please also send a copy of a certificate from a doctor or an equivalent expert, such as a psychologist, speech therapist or physical therapist, indicating the grounds for special arrangements to specialneeds@helsinki.fi.
