The course is available only for GPC students
During the seminar, students will familiarise themselves with research literature relevant to their chosen thesis subject, formulate a research question based on the literature and commence writing the thesis. Students will also examine the principles of research ethics, as well as the University of Helsinki provisions on cheating and plagiarism, gaining the ability to take these factors into consideration in their own research. In addition, students will practice presenting their research, linking it with a topical social and/or theoretical problem, critically evaluating scientific texts written by others and conducting scientific discussion in their research community.
Spring term of the first year of studies
The seminar focuses on the development of research skills related to the formulation and presentation of scientific research questions. The seminar also considers questions of research ethics and teaches how to identify them in the research proposals under development. The seminar trains students in scientific argumentation and writing, the giving of feedback and presentation. Students will present a research proposal of approximately 10 pages, including an introdution to the research topic and question, descriptions of central concepts and theories, as well as a preliminary proposal of the empirical material to be used and the methods of analysis. In addition, students will draft a personal study plan and a supervision agreement with a supervisor representing their discipline.
Related reading will be announced during the seminar.
