Description

  • The Doctoral Programme in Population Health coordinates the course.
  • This is an optional course.
  • The course is part of the Field-Specific Studies module.
  • The course is available to students of other degree programmes.

The learning outcome is that the participant is able to independently appraise the quality of scientific articles, e.g. act as a reviewer for journals.

The course can be completed at any stage of studies, Organised in the autumn term

Session topics: WS1 critical appraisal of effectiveness studies, PICO WS2 critical appraisal of systematic reviews WS3 critical appraisal of diagnostic studies WS4 critical appraisal of harm (case-control/ cohort) studies.

Textbook for participants: Users' Guides to the Medical Literature: A Manual for Evidence-Based Clinical Practice, 3rd ed. Gordon Guyatt, Drummond Rennie, Maureen O. Meade, Deborah J. Cook.

Interactive lectures, small group work, homework, student presentations.

Pass/fail

Attendance and assignments = 2 ECTS

4 small group workshops of 4x45 min each with homework. Each session (WS) starts with an introductory interactive lecture and continues with small group work (8 per group). Homework consists of same study type. Students can also present their own study design for discussion of the PICO. Learning material can be selected to reflect the students interests.
