Students will learn the general principles of veterinary anesthesia, pain management and intensive care.

Students will be able to

  • describe the method of use, mechanism of action and adverse effects of the most important medications used in anesthesia
  • assess the pain and treat it
  • describe the mechanisms by which anesthetic equipment and monitors work
  • describe how anesthetic monitoring takes place
  • plan anesthesia, pain management and rehydration therapy for healthy animals and the most common problematic patients in various circumstances

The course embraces the principles of general anaesthesia in veterinary medicine, which are discussed in a comparative way among species. More detailed information are provided for dogs, cats and horses. Clinical conditions commonly affetcing dogs, cats and horses which have influence on the anaesthetic process, are also addressed.

Specific book chapters and reviews integrating the contents of the lectures will be made available on Moodle before and during the course.
