After completing the course, you will
- Be able to pronounce Finnish
- Understand the vocabulary of the course topics
- Be able to introduce and provide basic information about yourself and your family
- Be able to communicate in the most common service encounters as well as certain frequent social situations in Finnish
- Be able to write brief messages on everyday topics
- Be familiar with certain central features of Finnish everyday life and culture

After completing the course, you will

- Be able to provide basic information about yourself and your family, as well as talk about your everyday life
- Be able to communicate in routine service encounters and certain frequent social situations
- Be able to write brief messages on everyday topics
- Be able to identify the central information from brief texts (such as notices) related to the course topics
- Be familiar with certain central features of Finnish everyday life and culture

FINN-114, 3 cr
- Routine social situations and service encounters
- Everyday basic vocabulary (greetings and introductions, countries, nationalities and languages, numbers, expressions of time, weather, food, studying, family)
- Basic structures of language (sounds, vocal harmony, interrogative and declarative clauses, singular partitive and genitive, the possessive structure (-lla on), verb types and conjugation)
- Introduction to Finnish life and culture
FINN-114, 5 cr
- Practising simple discussions and routine service encounters
- Everyday basic vocabulary (greetings and introductions; countries, nationalities and languages; numbers; expressions of time; weather; food; studying; family; daily routine; travel; free time; communicating in shops and restaurants)
- Basic structures of language (sounds, vocal harmony, consonant gradation, interrogative and declarative clauses, singular partitive and genitive, the possessive structure (-lla on), conjugation and verb types, local cases, the you imperative, the most common word types, demonstrative pronouns)
- Introduction to Finnish life and culture
- The course consists of contact teaching, pair and group work, as well as independent study.
- Students are expected to actively participate during classes and complete home assignments.
- Attendance of 80% is strongly recommended,
- while 50% attendance is required for completing the course.

- FINN-114, 3 cr: The assessment is based on a final examination and potential course assignments, as well as participation during the course.
- FINN-114, 5 cr: The assessment is based on potential interim examinations and a final examination, as well as potential course assignments and participation during the course.
- The weight given to the different assessment factors will be announced at the beginning of the course.
