The course is elective in the Food Technology and Product Development in the Food sector study modules.
It is highly recommended if the student plans to carry out their M.Sc. thesis in packaging technology related topic.
ETK-250 Pakkausteknologian perusteet or equivalent basic knowledge of food packaging technology (on record) or FOOD-119 Literature Examination, Packaging Technology (available directly at the beginning of the term, for international and Finnish M.Sc. program students. The ETK250 is highly recommended for all Finnish speaking students.
The student connects relevant scientific theories with practical applications in food packaging technology. After the course, the student understands the key interactions between food, packaging, and environment, and is able to evaluate the functionality of packaging.

Periods I and II.
Barrier properties of packaging materials, modified atmosphere packaging, active packaging, aseptic packaging, biodegradable packaging materials.
Literature assigned at lectures.
Lectures introduce the theoretical background and group assignments deepen the learning.
Assignments (40 %), final examination (60 %).
