Learning outcomes

Students learn about the fundamental processes on energy and matter balance of ecosystems as well as the methodologies to measure energy and gas fluxes above vegetated landscapes. They will understand the basics of climate and weather systems and bioclimatology and learn how the terrestrial carbon sink can be modeled.

Contents

We study the physical environment (light, wind, temperature, humidity) and its impacts on ecophysiological processes in ecosystems (mainly forests), and vice versa; how forests affect their physical environment. The course includes aspects of physiological ecology, ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, and transfer of momentum, energy and material (water, CO2, and atmospheric trace gases) between vegetation and the atmosphere. It also includes basics of bioclimatology and extreme events affecting ecosystems. Models, instrumentation and measurements, associated with the study of plant biometeorology, are also introduced.
