For forest ecology and management students.

BSc level studies in forest ecology and management or equivalent level contents in plant production.

To advance and complement student's knowledge of the scientific basis of forest regeneration and early silvicultural practices, to improve skills in retrieving, criticizing and applying new information, and to communicate effectively of project results.

After the course, the student can

  • analyse the role of and apply principles forest genetics in forest regeneration questions and practices,
  • compile information for seedling production, handling and planting systems based on biological, economic and technological information
  • design and apply field methods for assessment of regeneration success and quality
  • summarize ways and methods for technological and economic evaluation of regeneration practices.
  • critically evaluate new information on forest regeneration and silvicultural issues
  • demonstrate professional skills and performance in problem solving and effectively communicate research results.

II period, first or second year of MSc studies, also for PhD studies.

Genetics of trees and tree populations, methods of tree breeding and seed orchard management, seed physiology and handling, production of regeneration material, natural and artificial regeneration methods, evaluation of regeneration success, logistics and organization of regeneration tasks and cost efficiency of forest regeneration. Current results and need of research and development work of the topic areas are included.

Laboratory and field visits.

The course consists of lectures, individual and group exercises and projects, site visits.

Individual and group exercises are mandatory.

Material provided and assigned during the course. The material will consist of lecture notes, text book, scientific literature and assigned individual and group tasks.

Reading of current scientific articles and presentations of literature reviews.

Most of the study material will be available at Moodle or as e-books.

1 – The student recognizes, repeats, remembers; Some relevant facts and matters pertaining to the subject have been presented.

2 – The student understands; The answer contains relevant facts and matter, however, the ccontents is small.

3 – The students can apply; Several relevant facts and matter are presented and discussed and with examples. Own thinking and reasoning is shown in examples and different points of view.

4 – The student analyses and combines: The answer brings up relevant facts and matters, and the response shows individual thinking and integration of different points of view, brings up new viewpoints or wholeness.

5 – The student combines and evaluates; The student shows, in addition to the facts and matters discussed above, profound discussions, comparisons and evaluations.
