Description

The course is compulsory in the English-speaking Bachelor’s Programme in Science on the study track in chemistry.

It is compulsory also in the Bachelor’s Programme in Chemistry, and in chemistry modules in Bachelor's Programme for Teachers of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. These are taught in Finnish and Swedish.

Bachelor level course.

Available also to students from other degree programmes.

For the students of the Bachelor Programme in Science (in English):

BSCH1001 Atoms, Molecules and Interactions, and BSCH1003 Organic Chemistry 1. The course BSCH1002 Energy, Reactivity and Chemical Equilibrium must be taken in parallel with BSCH1105, if not studied earlier.

The students of other bachelor programmes (i.e. chemistry minors): please, consult the course pages of KEK105 in Finnish and Swedish!

Upon completing the course the student

  • recognizes the risk factors in laboratory work
    • the health threatening influences, as well as the explosive and flammable properties of compounds
    • risk factors of the glassware and electrical equipment
  • is capable of working safely in a laboratory
    • finds out the safety risks involved in the work to be done
    • knows how to follow the safe working methods
    • can protect him-/herself against the risk factors
  • can behave and act in the correct way in laboratory accidents
  • knows the proper handling of chemical waste
  • understands the meaning of the labwork as a part of the science
  • understands the main functions of analytic and synthetic work
  • knows experiments demonstrating thermochemistry, electronic structures of atoms, rate and rate constants of reactions, protolysis, solubility and electrochemistry
  • is familiar with some synthesis and analytics methods, and understands the meaning of accuracy and reliability in analytics
masters the use of a Bunsen burner
  • can apply the synthetic chemistry methods: heating a solution under a condenser, using of magnetic and mechanical stirrers, distillation under normal and reduced pressure, recrystallization, filtering, extraction, sublimation.
  • is capable of carrying out a simple synthesis according to instructions
  • can employ physical methods like melting point, boiling point, refraction index, and thin layer chromatography for characterizing and analyzing the quality of the synthesis products
  • is able to measure and interpret an IR spectrum
  • understands the connection between the reaction mechanisms and practical procedures of synthesis

Recommended timing in different programmes:

  • the Chemistry Track of the Bachelor programme in Science: first year Spring term
  • the students of other degree programmes should consult the instructions of KEK105 given in Finnish or Swedish.

The course is offered annually in Period II (80 students) and in Period IV (40 students).

Safety regulations of laboratory work and chemical handling. Handling of chemical and other laboratory waste. Risk factors in laboratory work and protection means. Actions in case of laboratory accidents. An examination of these occupational safety matters must be passed before starting the work in laboratory. An inorganic synthesis and analysis of the product. Experimental work on: calorimetry, flame reactions, reaction rate, two acid-base titrations, determining the solubility product of calcium hydroxide, and determining the voltage of galvanic cells. Reports of the experiments must be completed.

In the beginning of the second part of the lab course, the safety matters concerning organic synthesis work are reviewed. A written examination of these matters must also be passed during the course. Seven organic synthesis exercises are done: bromination of an alkene, two acid-catalysed esterifications, benzoine condensation, reduction using a hydride compound, the Friedel-Crafts acylation and an oxidation. The purity of the products is analysed according to the determined physical constants, like the melting point and refraction index. Also an IR spectrum is recorded and interpreted for each product. Each synthesis must be reported using a specific form.

A compendium of the instructions is provided.

Laboratory work. Each one of the listed exercises must be completed and reported in a proper manner.

The course is completed, when all the required works are properly completed and the reports are accepted. Assessment scale: Pass/fail.

Kurssi koostuu kolmesta osiosta:

The course is completed by mandatory laboratory exercises, including written reports.

Esitietovaatimuksia sovelletaan kemian kandiohjelmassa syksyllä aloittaneisiin opiskelijoihin siten, että vähintään yksi I periodin kemian teoriakurssi (AMV tai Orgaaninen kemia 1 tai Liuoskemia) on pitänyt läpäistä kurssitentissä. Jos tämän ehdon täyttäviä on niin paljon, että heitäkin joudutaan karsimaan, niin opiskelijat laitetaan tätä varten ensisijaisuusjonoon seuraavan kaavan mukaisesti: paras arvosana + 2 * toiseksi paras arvosana + 3 * huonoin arvosana (mainituista kolmesta I periodin kurssista).
