The course is compulsory at the study track in chemistry of the Bachelor’s Programme in Science (in English). It is compulsory also in the Bachelor’s Programme in Chemistry (Finnish/Swedish), and in the chemistry modules in Bachelor's Programme for Teachers of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Bachelor level course available also for students of other degree programmes.

KEK105 Basic laboratory work in chemistry (or KEK185)

It is recommended that the module Basic Studies in Chemistry is completed prior to this course. Especially, BSCH1004 Inorganic Chemistry is highly emphasized. Of the elective courses, Solution Chemistry aims to deepen the theoretical basis applied on this labwork course.

The course unit KEK208 Inorganic Labworks 2 is planned to follow immediately KEK207, while included in the appropriate study module.

  1. understand reactions of inorganic compounds and analysis methods based upon them
    • recognize from reagents if they are, among other things
      • acids or bases (in addition strong or weak)
      • precipitants (knows in addition what they precipitate)
      • ligands (in addition something of the stabilities of the complexes)
      • oxidants or reductants (in addition something of their strength)
    • knows how reagents act on the most common substances and can find it out for less common substances (using literature and/or experimentally)
    • can write reaction equations for the above reactions and understand what requirements the facts seen from the reaction equations set for the performance of the reactions
    • can determine what kind of conditions are most appropriate for different reactions and can arrange them in practice, e.g.
      • a strongly acidic solution (pH -1…+2) with an appropriate amount of an appropriate acide
      • a strongly basic solution (pH 12…15)
      • a neutral, weakly acidic or weakly basic solution with an appropriate and enough efficient buffer
      • force anions into acid form and realizes when this is needed
      • force metals into complex form and realizes when this is needed
      • reverse the two previous, if the situation requires
      • change the oxidation states of the elements before the reaction, when necessary, and can do this without that the reagent used for this remains disturbing
      • diminish the polarity of water by adding e.g. ethanol
  2. possesses analytical working accuracy
    • masters the use of analytical instruments (analytical balance, volumetric flask, volumetric pipette and burette) and knows when they have to be used
    • masters quantitative transfer and separation of substances – even with small amounts (100 mg)
    • can perform the reactions so that they proceed completely enough and/or as completely as possible and determine when this has been accomplished (i.e. can observe the progress of reactions)
    • can beware systematic errors, evaluate reliabilities of results and find sources of error
    • knows how to vary reagent amounts, reactions times, etc. to find out, how these factors limit the reaction
  3. produces correct and accurate analysis results with these skills

Second year of the Bachelor’s Programme.

The course is offered annually in teaching period III and in teaching period IV.

The course begins with familiarizing with ionic reactions, and a written exam on the theory of them must be passed. After this, reactions are carried out in practice in test tubes and reaction equations are written, to be checked by the instructor. Next, 10 quantitative analysis exercises are done, one of which is gravimetric, seven are titrimetric and two spectrophotometric. A written exam of these methods must be passed afterwards. Furthermore, an inorganic compound is synthetized and analyzed. Of this task a report is filed. Finally a qualitative analysis is performed from a sample containing several ions. Also from this exercise complete reaction equations are written and evaluated. As the final exercise of the course four pure compounds are identified using the skills accomplished and literature.

A compendium of the instructions is provided.

Laboratory work and written exercises.

The general scale 1-5. Points 1 and 2 of the learning outcomes are weighed equally. The accuracy of the quantitative analyses and the exam after the work are highest emphasized in the assessment.

Opetuksen yhteydessä voi myös jatkaa aiemmin kesken jääneitä töitä. Periodissa III kurssille ovat aina etusijalla kulloisetkin toisen vuoden pääaineopiskelijat. Näin ollen kurssin suorittamista mahdollisuuksien mukaan nyt kesällä suositellaan kaikille vanhemmille (nyt vähintään kaksi vuotta opiskelleille) pääaineopiskelijoille, joilta se vielä puuttuu, sekä kaikille sivuaineopiskelijoille, jotka haluavat sen suorittaa, ja jotka täyttävät esitietovaatimukset. Sen sijaan yhden vuoden opiskelleet pääaineopiskelijat eivät vielä ole kurssin varsinaista kohderyhmää mutta yksittäisten sellaisten osallistuminen voidaan perustellusta syystä sallia.
