The course is compulsory at the study track in chemistry of the Bachelor’s Programme in Science (in English). It is compulsory also in the Bachelor’s Programme in Chemistry (in Finnish/Swedish). For students of other degree programmes it is an elective course in the subject study module.

Bachelor level course available also for students of other degree programmes.

KEK207 Inorganic Chemistry Labworks 1 must be completed.

The Basic Studies in Chemistry. Of the elective studies especially KEK223 Solution Chemistry (Liuoskemia) is closely connected and supports studying this course.

The skills learned at KEK207 are strengthened, and additionally:

  • know how to resolve analytical problems using classical methods of analysis
  • know atomic spectroscopy and powder x-ray diffraction as analysis techniques

The second year of studies, spring term.

The course is offered annually in Period III, and another option in Period IV.

Planned to be taken in the same period, and directly following the completion of KEK207 Inorganic chemistry labworks 1.

A technical salt is analyzed. Most part of the sample is formed of one ionic compound, the so called main salt. In addition to the ions of the main salt, the technical salt contains small amounts of other ions. The salt is first analyzed qualitatively. After this, four ions (usually other ions than those of the main salt) are determined quantitatively. The analysis methods for this are planned applying the skills learned during the previous course and literature sources. In addition, two ions are determined by atomic emission spectroscopy, and a powder x-ray diffraction of the technical salt is measured. A detailed report must be filed of the completed work.

Selected literature is available in the laboratory

Laboratory work and written report. The laboratory work is problem based, consisting of one extensive analysis task and a written report.

The general scale 1-5. The learning outcomes of KEK207 are extended,and the 1 and 2 assigned for KEK207 are again assessed, weighed equally with each other. The accuracy of the quantitative analyses and the report after the work are highest emphasized in the assessment.
