Welcome to Spoken interaction in English!

This is a BA-level option course in Applied Linguistics in English in the BA Programme for Languages.

The aim of this course is to familiarise students with the analysis of spoken interaction. We will consider what is special about spoken language and explore examples of English used in various contexts. We will explore both L1 and L2 uses of English, also including interactions in English as a lingua franca, and discuss changes in the way people communicate with spoken English today. We will also consider the implications that research on spoken interaction has on the teaching and assessment of spoken English.

The course is oriented towards students with an interest in English teaching but is open to all students who are intrigued by spoken interaction.

Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
• describe what is special about spoken language and what kind of language is used in spoken interaction
• explain and apply basic concepts in the study of spoken interaction
• conduct a small-scale analysis of spoken interaction in English
• discuss changes in the way people communicate with spoken English today
• discuss implications of research on spoken English(es) to the teaching and assessment of English, and provide research-based justifications for applying specific assessment practices

Course assignments include readings as well as individual and group assignments related to the readings and to analysing spoken interaction. Students are expected to come to class prepared, which means reading any assigned texts and completing homework exercises as requested. The main assignment is a final course project.

Assessment is based on active attendance and selected course assignments, with emphasis on the final course project. The course is worth 5 credits.

**Due to the situation caused by the COVID-19 virus, in the fourth period, the teaching of this course will be arranged as peer and teacher supported self-study. Students can find further instructions on the course Moodle site.**
