Learning outcomes:
My aim is to give students a different framework with which to view an ongoing, controversial, and important political situation, free from media bias. They will learn how to analyze events at the national and subnational levels in addition to the international. They are also expected to actively participate in class discussions as the course is intended to be a two-way dialogue. Questioning fellow students, and me, is encouraged!

Teaching methods:
Online readings supported by in-class lectures. Class time will also be devoted to discussions, debates, and other activities allowing students to share their ideas verbally. Final work is an essay to be completed using a mix of in-class materials and those which students are expected to find on their own.

Course outline:
While the events of 2013-14 have come to be known as the Ukraine Crisis, this actual series of crises has numerous precedents in both Ukraine and other former Soviet states. Therefore, a study of the causes and consequences of the Ukrainian scenario also offers an analysis into how other states dealing with similar problems have so far avoided similar outcomes.

By analyzing the Ukraine Crisis, we can find several examples of long-term political issues affecting the wider post-Soviet region. These include the simultaneously conflicting and complimentary roles of formal institutions and informal politics; regime change, or “color revolutions”; the role of Russia and the West in Eurasia; democratization/authoritarianism vs. economic performance; and war, conflict, and non-recognized states. These issues will be explored in comparative perspective using Ukraine and selected post-Soviet states which best demonstrate the diversity of cases within each topic.

This course heavily focuses on the domestic sources of political instability and conflict. In this way, it intentionally strays from the more prevalent US/EU-Russia discourse that tends to ignore the importance of domestic and regional realities. It is based on my dissertation research, personal observations in Ukraine during the Euromaidan protests, as well as prominent research in the field.

Information on the distribution of grades (a graph showing how many grades were given and how they were distributed to the grade categories 0-5) will appear on this site once the results have been registered and show on your transcript of studies.

Järjestetään lukuvuosittain.

Opintojaksossa tarkastellaan Ukrainan suhdetta sen naapurivaltoihin, ennen kaikkea Venäjään ja Euroopan unioniin. Erityisesti analysoidaan suhteissa tapahtuneita muutoksia sekä muutosten taustalla olevia poliittisia ja kulttuurisia vaikuttimia.

Opetusmenetelmät ja aktiviteetit määräytyvät kurssikohtaisesti. Palaute kerätään systemaattisesti.

Opintojakso arvostellaan asteikolla 0-5. Opintojakson arvosana määräytyy suoritustavan (esim. luentokurssi) mukaisesti määriteltyjen tehtävien, aktiivisuuden ja muiden suoritusvaatimusten perusteella. Arviointimenetelmät ovat kiinteässä yhteydessä osaamistavoitteisiin ja opintojakson opetusmenetelmiin.

Opintojaksoon soveltuva luentokurssi, johon sisältyy kirjallisuutta ja kurssin mukaan sovellettuja tehtäviä. Vaihtoehtoisena suoritustapana kirjallisuuskuulustelu.
