Target group

It is included in the programme Master in Languages.

The Seminar is compulsory for all the students of Spanish Philology.

Prerequisites

Students should have completed or are completing the courses within Advanced Studies in Spanish Philology.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, students have learned to develop the necessary basic research capabilities learned along the Proseminar and used in the Bachelor’s thesis. In addition to this, students are able to

-present relevant issues of the discipline in terms of research topic;

-manage their own work using the theories and research methods;

-manage large amount of materials and resources at their disposal;

-know how to get the source literature and they are familiar with methodological and ethical issues related to the research data;

-classify and analyze data, make comparisons with other relevant studies and extract the main results of the work;

-generalize and communicate the results;

-know the principles of scientific argumentation;

-to use academic writing and interaction practices;

-evaluate critically the research of others, and give and receive feedback;

-apply the skills learned in the Seminar to the working life.

Timing

It is recommended to start the Seminar when some of the core courses in Advanced Studies are completed.

Contents

The Seminar deals with the different phases of the research process until its presentation in a written form.

The course will focus on research questions and the alignment of these with the theory, material and method of analysis.

It also includes the principles of the academic writing in order to further develop students’ capabilities required for writing a Master’s thesis.

Seminar includes the practice of communicating and sharing research results, discussions, producing constructive comments about other works or research plans.

During the seminar, students will write their Master thesis.

Activities and teaching methods in support of learning

-Individual and group activities aimed at the elaboration of a working plan/project that will be materialized in a Master’s thesis.

-Recommended readings.

-Teacher activities will be documented in Moodle platform.

Assessment practices and criteria

Seminar lessons are graded on a scale from 0 to 5.

Assessment takes into account:

-the attendance to the lessons;

-the participation in the activities;

-the completion of the tasks;

-the ability to solve different questions and tasks during the course;

-the skills to communicate (present, discuss, argue, comment, etc.) different aspects related to the own research of others research;

-the process of the Master’s thesis.

Recommended optional studies

Methodological courses and theoretical courses related to the topic under research are highly recommended.

Completion methods

The course is offered in the form of contact teaching.

Compulsory attendance for lessons given by the teacher; 100% of attendance is required when students present their own works.

Students will communicate verbally the results of their research in the classroom to the other participants of the course. They will answer questions and take benefit of the feedback provided by the others.

Students will act as opponents of the work of other students, commenting critically and constructively their works.

Students will complete their Master’s thesis
