Finnish for foreigner courses are part of studies of  Bachelor’s Programme in the Languages and Literatures of Finland.

BEGINNERS AND INTERMEDIATE LEVEL COURSES (A1.1–B2.1)

The following online courses will begin in October  2020:
Finnish 1A 3cr, Finnish 1B 2 cr, Finnish 2A 3 cr, Finnish 3 5 cr, Finnish 4 5 cr, Finnish 5 5cr and Finnish 6 5 cr.
 

The teaching language is Finnish.

 

Finnish 1A, 3 cr

After completing the course, you will

  • Be able to pronounce Finnish
  • Understand the vocabulary of the course topics
  • Be able to introduce and provide basic information about yourself and your family
  • Be able to communicate in the most common service encounters as well as certain frequent social situations in Finnish
  • Be able to ask your conversation partner in such encounters to repeat themselves and talk more slowly
  • Be able to write brief messages on everyday topics
  • Target proficiency level A1.1

No prior studies or knowledge is required.

Finnish 1B, 2 cr

After completing the course, you will

  • Be able to talk about your everyday life and living accommodations
  • Be able to take part in very simple discussions on the course topics with the help of a partner
  • Be able to identify the central information from brief texts (such as notices) related to the course topics
  • Be able to communicate in ordinary and routine service encounters, as well as inquire about essential matters
  • Be able to explain which language(s) you would like to use in different types of conversations
  • Know how to learn Finnish outside the classroom
  • Be familiar with certain central characteristics of Finnish everyday life and living culture
  • Target proficiency level A1.2

For students who have completed the Finland 1 A course or have equivalent skills. The starting level for the course is A1.1.

Finnish 2A, 3 cr

After completing the course, you will

  • Be able to talk about food and communicate in restaurants
  • Be able to talk about a regular day of work or studies
  • Be able to talk about past events
  • Be able to take part in simple discussions related to the course topics and express your opinion
  • Be able to ask for and understand simple directions
  • Understand and be able to write brief messages related to situations occurring during work or studies
  • Be familiar with certain central characteristics of colloquial Finnish
  • Be familiar with the basics of Finnish working life and visiting customs
  • Be familiar with online material supporting learning Finnish appropriate for your proficiency level
  • Target proficiency level A1.3

For students who have completed the Finnish 1 B course or have equivalent skills. The starting level for the course is A1.2.

Finnish 2B, 2 cr

After completing the course, you will

  • Be able to describe your health and talk about your free time and hobbies
  • Be able to talk about past events
  • Be able to take part in various social situations and service encounters
  • Be able to look for information on the course topics (such as hobby opportunities) from various sources
  • Be familiar with certain characteristics of Finnish free time activities
  • Recognise the situations in which you are able to rely on Finnish and have the courage to use Finnish in these situations
  • Target proficiency level A2.1

For students who have completed the Finland 2A course (A1.3.) or have equivalent competence.

Finnish 3, 5 cr

After completing the course, you will

  • Be able to talk about past events in all tenses
  • Be able to talk about your education and work history, as well as any career plans
  • Be able to talk about the festivities and customs of your own culture
  • Be able to discuss and express opinions on nature conservation, culture, arts and consumption
  • Be able to read and write simple brief texts related to the course topics
  • Be proficient in polite requests and able to talk about conditional events
  • Be familiar with the functions of the passive voice and able to use it in suggestions, narration and colloquial Finnish
  • Be able to use colloquial expressions appropriately
  • Know how parallel language use can support interaction
  • Be able to negotiate the languages to be used in communication and tell your partner in dialogue what promotes your understanding
  • Be familiar with Finnish holidays and customs, as well as Finnish cultural life and arts
  • Target proficiency level A2.2

For students who have completed the Finnish 2B course (A2.1.) or have equivalent competence.

Finnish 4, 5 cr

After completing the course, you will

  • Be able to discuss and express opinions on history, geography and sports, as well as cultural differences and related stereotypes
  • Be able to read and write texts related to the course topics
  • Be able to make comparisons
  • Be able to describe the personality and appearance of individuals
  • Be able to express agreement and disagreement in several ways
  • Be able to write official and unofficial email messages
  • Be familiar with various text genres, including literature
  • Be able to talk about past events in all tenses with the passive voice, also in conditional expressions and colloquial Finnish
  • Be proficient in using the most common colloquial expressions
  • Be familiar with Finnish history and geography, as well as able to talk about the history and geography of your own country

For students who have completed Finnish 3 course (A2.2.) or have equivalent competence.

Finnish 5, 5 cr

After completing the course, you will

  • Be familiar with the vocabulary and practices related to seeking employment and job interviews
  • Be able to draw up job applications and a CV
  • Be able to complete social services and health care forms
  • Be able to read notices and instructions
  • Be familiar with expressions that can be used for suggestions, persuasion and polite refusals
  • Be able to describe and discuss various topics related to society and culture
  • Be able to read and write text related to the course topics
  • Be able to identify various text genres and be familiar with various non-fiction texts
  • Be able to identify and use participles
  • Have the tools relevant for the peer assessment and self-assessment of your language

Finnish 4 (at least grade 3) or equivalent skills. The starting level for the course is B1.1.

Finnish 6, 5 cr

After completing the course, you will

  • Be able to express yourself well in Finnish both verbally and in writing
  • Be able to describe and write about various topics both informally and officially
  • Be able to read both non-fiction texts and literature
  • Be able to use common conversational phrases both face-to-face and on the phone
  • Be able to construct and give oral presentations
  • Be able to express various tones in conversation, such as certainty and uncertainty, compassion and sympathy
  • Be able to summarise texts both verbally and in writing
  • Be familiar with the differences between colloquial and literary language, as well as be able to choose the appropriate manner of speaking
  • Be familiar with non-finite clauses
  • Be proficient in basic Finnish grammar

    Target proficiency level: B2.1

Finnish 5 (at least grade 3) or equivalent skills. The starting level for the course is B1.2.
