Opinnot Avoimessa yliopistossa
Viestinnän perusopintojen (25 op) opintojaksoilla on erilaisia suoritusmahdollisuuksia. Suoritustapavalinta tehdään ilmoittautumisen yhteydessä. Perusopinnot on mahdollista opiskella myös kokonaan etäopintoina. Myös aineopinnot (35 op) on mahdollista opiskella etäopintoina. Katso ohje aineopintojen valinnaisista opinnoista.

Yhteiskuntatieteiden perusopinnot on osa valtiotieteellisen tiedekunnan kandidaatintutkintoa kaikissa tiedekunnan oppiaineissa. Avoimessa yliopistossa opintoja voivat suorittaa kaikki niistä kiinnostuneet. Yhteiskuntatieteiden perusopinnot ja sivuaineen perusopinnot oppiaineittain (pdf).
Lukuvuotena 2016-2017 Helsingin yliopiston perustutkinto-opiskelijat voivat osallistua viestinnän opintoihin maksutta. Opintojaksoilla on kiintiö perustutkinto-opiskelijoille (5-40 paikkaa/ opintojakso). Opintotarjonta ja linkit Weboodin opetustapahtumille näet täältä (Google Docs).

In the basic studies of Media and Communication students learn about the communication of organizations and the mass media as a social, cultural and historical phenomenon. The study module offers students the basic tools for societal study of communication. Students learn to recognize the main trends in communication theories and to understand the focal concepts of the science. Students will also form an idea of communication as the object of societal decision making and judicial regulation.
The study unit presents viewpoints into the study of communication and the public sphere, focal concepts and current issues. After completing the study unit, students are able to structure the field of communication studies, are familiar with the focal concepts and are able to study the phenomena of communication by using the concepts and viewpoints offered by research.
Students learn about the study of the public sphere. After completing the study unit, students have formed an idea of the most important theories of communication and especially the public sphere, and current research based on these theories.
Students learn about the way the public sphere works and about the communication organizations operating within it and their occupational practices. The main focus is on Finnish research of communication and the public sphere. After completing the study unit, students have formed an idea of how the Finnish public sphere operates and of the operational practices of the different public actors and their current changes.
Students learn about the main issues of European media policy and the most important methods of media regulation. The main focus in on the Finnish media system. After completing the study unit, students have formed a general picture of the structure of the international media system and its operational principles.
After completing the intermediate studies, students understand how the discipline has formed during the course of history. Students have an understanding of the research in the field of communication and also what kind of institutions the Finnish media landscape is made of. Students will also specialize in one or more special fields of research in communication according to their own interests.
Basic Studies in Media and Communication.
Kaikille yhteiset opintojaksot 15 op
During the study unit, students learn about the history of the study of communication. After completing the study unit, students have an understanding of how the field has formed during its history. Students learn to recognize different kinds of research questions, different theories and viewpoints that have been focal in the study of communication from the beginning of the 20th century to the modern day.
After completing the study unit, students have basic knowledge of the quantitative and qualitative research methods used in communication research.
After completing the study unit, students are familiar with the basic structures and current issues of Finnish media institutions and are able to critically evaluate the operational principles of media organizations and to understand alternative ways of approaching the challenges the organizations face.

Viestinnän tutkimusalat 15-20 op
After completing the study unit, students are familiar with the main trends of theory and research traditions of the study of the public sphere and the prominent current themes of discussion in the field. The focus is on three fields of the study of the public sphere: theory and research of power and the media, research of communication policy and regulation, and political communication research.
The aim of the study unit is for the students to learn about media development, trends in media research and focal research fields. Students study media as part of changes in the society, culture and technology. Central themes are media technology and media culture, audiences and power. The aim is to understand the production and consumption of media as part of society and the role of media in relation to other organizations of society.
After completing the study unit, students are able to analyze different trends in organization research. Students learn to study society from the viewpoints of different organization theories. The focus is on studying modern concepts of organizations and on more recent interdisciplinary viewpoints. All organizations are intersected with sociological, social psychological and communication theoretical and leadership theoretical dimensions among others.
Viestinnän ammattikäytännöt 0-5 op
After completing the study unit, students have formed an idea of the modern practices in journalism. Topics include knowledge production and dramatization, news criteria and news story, reportage, interview technique, profiles, columns, using dialogue in text, the difference between observation and interpretation, new types of stories in new media and the point of view technique.
During the study unit, students learn about the demands of the legislation on public administration and about the language of public administration by doing exercises. Students learn about communication in public administration especially from the viewpoint of evaluation practices and also in a concrete way about different structures of public administration and communication. Public administration is understood as organizations of the state, municipalities and other organizations within the sphere of the Act on the Openness of Government Activities whose communication and flow of information is controlled by the principle of openness. Students learn about the characteristics of communication in public administration from the viewpoints of democracy, legislation and issues of publicity starting with the constitution.
After completing the study unit, students are familiar with communication in work communities from the leadership point of view, have learned about the current trends of studying organizational communication and are able to critically evaluate the practices of organizational communication on this basis.
Students learn about the practical tasks of online communication. Focus is on the practical forms of online communication, online publishing, doing a web project and social media as a tool for practical online communication.
