The course is compulsory for students completing pedagogical studies for teachers (60 cr).

Students who have completed the course will

  • understand didactics as an area of education and as the theoretical basis of teachers’ professional knowledge and skills
  • understand the process of teaching–studying–learning and understand the key elements in the planning, implementation and assessment of teaching as well as their interrelationships, and be able to apply them to their own field of education
  • understand the educational significance and ethical nature of teaching

The course is completed during the one year of STEP studies. The course is organized in the autumn semester in Period 1.

The course examines the following topics:

  • The basic concepts of teaching, the relationship between the theory and practice of teaching as well as an introduction to independent pedagogical thought
  • The planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching and learning based on both the curriculum and theoretical perspectives
  • Theoretical perspectives on teaching diverse learners, the integrative approach and multiprofessional collaboration
  • Students’ own approaches to and notions of learning, including the related reflection
  • Analysis of the outcomes and interaction related to the teaching–studying–learning process based on observations during fieldwork.

Arvosana muodostuu viisiportaisella asteikolla tenttiarvosanan perusteella.

This course is part of the Teacher as a Researcher course.

The scope of the course entity of Teacher as a Researcher is 10 credits and in the Pedagogical Studies for Subject Teachers it consists of 8 credits of Teacher as a Researcher and 2 credits of Didactics.

The 2-credit Didactics component of the course is organized in the autumn semester in Period 1. The 8-credit Teacher as a Researcher component is organized in the spring semester, in Periods 3 and 4.

This is a lecture course with an exam.
