Kognitiivinen neurotiede ja kliininen neuropsykologia

A course on how our brain and nervous system changes throughout our lifetimes.
This course offers a concise overview of neuroplasticity and explores how our brains change continuously in response to our actions and experiences. Together, we will discuss key experimental findings and learn about neuroplasticity in various contexts.

After this course the student:

  • will be familiar with methods used to study neuroplasticity from cellular to systems level, e.g. electrophysiology, optogenetics, TMS, and fMRI.
  • will have knowledge of the history and will be able to explain the basic concepts of neuroplasticity and different types of learning.
  • can distinguish between factors that positively or negatively affect neuroplasticity, e.g. development, life style
  • can recognise and classify the basic mechanisms of motor, sensory, and associative learning.
  • can assess the importance of neuroplasticity for adaptive behaviour.
  • will be familiar with conditions of adaptive and maladaptive plasticity, e.g. expertise & skill acquisition, health behaviour, substance abuse, neurological and personality disorders, ageing, developmental and adult psychopathology.
  • can estimate how neuroplasticity may be exploited for rehabilitation, e.g. after acquired brain damage or to treat depression.
  • will be able to search, read, and critically evaluate scientific literature on a chosen topic, and present their work to other students.

The course topics include:

  • History and basic concepts of neurogenesis and neural plasticity
  • Motivation, Action, Choice: Neural and Behavioral Mechanisms
  • Methods to study neuroplasticity
  • Neural plasticity across the lifespan
  • Hormones and brain plasticity
  • Environmental influences
  • Pharmacological modulation of learning and brain plasticity
  • Cognitive plasticity in behavioural and neurologic disorders
  • Neuroplasticity in rehabilitation

Individual sessions will be dedicated to

  1. Introduction & Synaptic Plasticity
  2. Adult Neurogenesis
  3. Sensory substitution and sensory plasticity
  4. Developmental plasticity
  5. Motor- and use-dependent plasticity
  6. Memory & sleep
  7. Lifestyle factors & plasticity
  8. Maladaptive plasticity
  9. Rehabilitation after brain injury

To pass this course successfully, the student will need to actively participate in the course and complete all work assignments. The course includes ~18 hr of online interactive learning sessions, and 117 hrs of independent study and group work - including regular work assignments via Moodle.

  • Psykonetin Cognitive Neuroscience -luentojen lisäksi pidetään opiskelijoiden taustasta riippuva määrä orientoivia luentoja.
  • Opiskelijat ohjataan perehtymään kiinnostuksensa kohteena olevaan tutkimusalaan pienryhmissä. Pienryhmätapaamisia opettajan kanssa järjestetään vähintään 4 kertaa.
  • Kurssikokonaisuus muotoutuu pitkälti opiskelijoiden taustan ja kiinnostuksen kohteiden mukaan. Kaikille yhteistä on vain Psykonet-luentojen ja artikkelikokoelman osuudet.

The course will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis.

Preparation:

In order to get the most out of the course, students should familiarise themselves with the basics of neural science, such as the anatomy of the brain, the principles of synaptic communication, brain imaging and sensory pathways.
