Jakso on yksi politiikan ja organisaatioiden opintosuunnan valinnaisista aineopintojaksoista.

Introduction to Politics and Organisations

After completing the course, students will be familiar with the central approaches, theories and concepts in the study of political participation. They will also be able to describe the central changes related to civic political participation in Finland and abroad, in addition to which they will gain proficiency in the independent and critical evaluation of processes related to political participation and related public discourse.

Second period of the second year of studies

The course examines central perspectives, theories and related empirical observations of political participation. The topics include both traditional (voting, choice of party, etc.) and more recent forms of political participation (political consumption, participation through social media, etc.). Further topics include opinions and values associated with civic political participation. The course focuses on political participation particularly from the perspective of ordinary citizens, thus excluding institutional participation (parties, interest groups) and professional political influencing (professional politicians, lobbyists).

Literature required for the online book examination in the Examinarium facility:

- Dalton Russell: Citizen Politics. Public Opinion and Political Parties in Advanced Industrial Democracies

- Evans Jocelyn: Voters & Voting. An Introduction

- Tim Highfield (2016): Social Media and Everyday Politics

Graded on a scale of 0 to 5 (0=fail, 1=pass, 2=satisfactory, 3=good, 4=very good, 5=excellent)

Kurssin opettajat: yliopistonlehtori Maria Bäck ja tuntiopettaja Lauri Rapeli.

The course is one of the optional intermediate courses under the Study Track in Politics and Organisations.

Students of the Bachelor’s Programme in Politics, Media and Communication: annually organised contact teaching. The required literature will be examined during the course as specified by the teacher. Depending on available student places, the lecture course is available also to students of other degree programmes. Completion methods will be further specified in the annual teaching programme.

Students of other degree programmes: contact teaching or an online book examination in the Examinarium facility. The book examination will cover three required works. A passing grade from the book examination will substitute for the entire course. The examination must be completed in its entirety in one examination session. An online book examination taken in the Examinarium facility is available throughout both terms.
