Introduction to Media and Communication

After completing the course, students will have an overview of the structures of media systems, as well as the related pressure for change and questions of ethics. Students will understand dimensions of society and communication policy underlying communication and the media field.

Second period of the first year of studies

The course examines international communication systems and the special characteristics of the Finnish media field. Other topics include social ideals and interests related to the media and journalism, questions of ethics, and topical themes in communication policy, such as questions concerning internet freedom, social media and digital civil rights. Central themes include the communication system, the political economy of the media, communication ethics, civil rights in communication and communication policy.

The course is compulsory for all students of the Bachelor’s Programme in Politics, Media and Communication. Lectures and a book examination. The course can be completed through contact and/or online teaching. Contact teaching is compulsory for students of the Bachelor’s Programme in Politics, Media and Communication. The completion methods will be specified in the teaching programme.
