Practical Interaction Research

After completing the course and absorbing its content, students will be able to identify interaction processes and complete a Master’s level thesis on a topic related to social interaction. They will be familiar with the fundamental structures of social interaction, such as physical presence, alternation, sequences and storytelling. They will also be trained in analysing interaction data with a discourse analysis method.

First and second periods

Course themes: interaction theories; the basics of the discourse analysis method; knowledge, power and emotions in interaction; stories in interaction; managing of participation; sharing of opportunities for action; influencing in interaction; favouring of like-mindedness in interaction, quantitative and experimental interaction research; psychotherapy as an example of institutional interaction

The following book is required reading for the course: Stevanovic & LIndholm (eds.) Keskustelunanalysi: Kuinka tutkia sosiaalista toimintaa ja vuorovaikutusta. Vastapaino 2016.

The homework assignments and final essay will be assessed on a scale of 0 to 5 (0 = fail, 1 = pass, 2 = satisfactory, 3 = good, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent).

The course will be organised annually as contact teaching. Lectures, assignments in the classroom, analysis assignments at home and a final essay based on the literature
