Qualitative Research Methods: Discourse Analysis and the Basic Constructs of Interaction

After completing the course, students will have practical skills in analysing interaction data from the perspective of discourse analysis. Thus, the course provides students with support and resources for the completion of a Master’s level thesis.

Third and fourth periods

During the course, students will be guided and trained in questions related to data collection, transcription and analysis, as well as reporting on the results.

The group assignments and literature examination will be assessed on a scale of 0 to 5 (0 = fail, 1 = pass, 2 = satisfactory, 3 = good, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent).

The course consists of contact meetings and work done in between the meetings, which may be completed individually or in pairs or groups, depending on students' wishes. A small thesis will be written during the course, with central findings to be presented orally in the final meeting. All students will also draft a brief written summary on the progress of the research process. Contact meetings include introductions to matters related to the research process, the study of literature related to the subject matter, work on students’ theses, as well as supervisory discussions with the teacher. Succesful participation in the course requires attending the contact meetings, as well as active participation in the work completed between the meetings individually, or in pairs or groups.
