Introduction to Disability Studies

Disability in Finnish Society

Upon completion of this course, students will be familiar with disability in various cultures, especially in the Global South (particularly in Africa and Central Asia). Students will also be able to identify and analyse disability in terms of human rights with a special reference to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In addition, students will learn about the development of the cooperation of disability organisations and other governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Second or third period

This is an introductory course to disability in a global context.

The literature will be announced during the lectures.

Graded on a scale of 0 to 5 (0 = Fail, 1 = Passable, 2 = Satisfactory, 3 = Good, 4 = Very Good, 5 = Excellent)

The course is composed of lectures, individual assignments and seminars.
