Prerequisites: PhD study right within the Doctoral Program at the Social Sciences.
The main purpose of specialist training is to provide PhD candidates with any specialist skills or knowledge needed to successfully complete their doctorate, and which is not provided by any other standard courses, or by the expertise of existing supervisors, at the University.
At any stage during the doctoral research, dependent upon the advice of the PhD candidate's supervisor. Specialist training can occur at any time of the year, and for both short and longer periods.
Dependent upon the nature of the specialist training required. This can include, but is not limited to: advice of an external expert in the field of research of the PhD candidate; presentation of research at conferences; participation at summer schools; professional training outside the University of Helsinki.
The literature recommended will depend upon the specialist training.
Teaching methods used will depend upon the specialist training.
The assessment criteria will depend upon the specialist training.

- Specialist themes I, 2-5 cr
- Specialist themes II, 2-5 cr
The language of instruction will depend upon the specialist training in each case.
