Description

Student is able to (1) describe main characteristics of Luther’s theological thinking and its background, (2) compare the different positions in the research of Luther’s theology and, (3) utilize the primary sources and available research material of Luther scholarship.

This course is taught in collaboration between Helsinki University and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary/California Lutheran University/Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley, USA). It is open to Master’s and Doctoral level students from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary/California Lutheran University/Graduate Theological Union and from Helsinki University. The international course has a shared syllabus, and the students will interact, while the classes remain distinct with their respective lecturers and administration.

The focus in the class is on Luther’s theology from a variety of angles, introduction to and analysis of the different loci or themes that characterize Luther’s theology, and interpretation of Luther’s theology in his historical context, as well as engaging Luther with critical contemporary perspectives. Primary text readings from Luther are paired with secondary text readings, and lectures.

The course expectations consist of written assignments in two main parts: (1) weekly written assignments in Moodle, where the participants will write short texts on Luther’s theology and engage Luther research, and comment on each other’s work as scheduled, and (2) an research essay written, submitted for a peer review and comments before submitting the final version for assessment.

The course will be carried out completely online on Moodle. Passing the course requires that all the given assignments are done properly and in time.

Assesment is based on how well the learning outcome expectations are met mostly via regular and prepared contribution on discussion boards and with the essay. Grading scale ranges from 0 to 5.
