Target group

The course can be completed as part of either the bachelor’s or master’s programme, or the 25/35 cr module. Restrictions on participation will be announced in the annual teaching programme.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will have an understanding of the definitions of nationhood and the various trends in the study of nationalism. They will be familiar with the ideological history, concepts and central figures of nationalism studies. Students will also be able to compare the differences between and emphases of various schools of nationalism studies.

Contents

The course examines the history, concepts and central thinkers of nationalism studies, as well as considers the significance of ethnicity, gender and the status of nation states to the definition of nationalism. The course also examines the manifestations of nationalism around the world, as well as the manner in which nationalist thought has shaped Finland.

Assessment practices and criteria

On a scale of 0 to 5. All completed studies will be taken into consideration, while self-assessment is promoted.
