The course can be completed as part of either the bachelor’s or master’s programme, or the 25/35 cr module. Restrictions on participation will be announced in the annual teaching programme.
Students will be able to analyse interaction between various factors in grand processes of change. In practice, emphasis will be on one of the themes included in the name of the course. Students will familiarise themselves with their chosen specific issue and its connections. In the essay, students will be able to analyse complex entities and formulate a logically progressing presentation.
Familiarisation with two grand processes, colonial power and, in a more general sense, imperialism including its consequences, as well as the economic integration of Europe. A more profound familiarisation with a chosen specific issue

· Milward, Alan: The European Rescue of the Nation State
· Pratt, Marie Louise: Imperial Eyes. Travel Writing and Transculturation

· Moravcsik, Andrew: The Choice for Europe. Social Purpose and State Power from Messina to Maastricht
· Said, Edward W.: Culture and Imperialism
On a scale of 0 to 5. All completed studies will be taken into consideration, while self-assessment is promoted.
Instructions for examinations
- Faculty examinations are held in Porthania (Yliopistonkatu 3).
- Faculty examinations begin at 9.00. Students must arrive by 9.30 and may leave no earlier than 9.30.
- Students may take only writing utensils with them to their seats (no bags etc.). No programmable calculators or dictionaries are allowed.
- Mobile phones must be switched off.
- Examination answers must be returned to the invigilator in the examination envelope.
- Students must provide proof of identity when submitting their answers.
