Seppo Laaksonen, The 2016 course

Welcome

This course is new but covers many things that have been considered in some recent years in the Survey Methodology course.

This course gives four options for students: (i) survey methodology (surveymetodiikka) in the same way as in recent years, meaning 5-12 credits altogether; it thus depends how much a student makes (see below), (ii) survey methodology plus ESS with Five credits (basic version) or (iii) survey methodology plus ESS with Ten credits (extended version), and (iv) the ESS option for them who have already made the basic survey methodology course earlier. This last one is possible to do participating in some small sessions of the course and preparing a report. The tasks for the report will be given. It is possible to use the training sessions in doing the report.

All options thus include basic survey methodology for both Master students and all others who hope to learn this important topic needed in various sciences. There is a special part European statistical system that can be a rather big and complex field. It is clear that it covers the ESS in its two forms: European Statistical System (much related to the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) and the European Social Survey (independent of the former system, much more countries). Their roles will be compared and thus learned useful things, possibly for your further employment career.

OBS. This course thus gives opportunity to get a new type of master but at the same time, it is possible to finalize the existing master program (if I know correctly until 2020). It means that you can include this course to SOCIAL STATISTICS master program where it is basically mandatory. We will add here more information later, see now MATERIALS.

I have prepared the manuscript for the SURVEY METHODOLOGY TEXTBOOK that is fairly complete just now. I will give the main parts of this manuscript for all registered participants, one chapter in each email, always before the topic will be considered in the course. It covers 14 chapters altogether but I think that the most advanced ones will not be import to submit completely unless you believe that you can manage them.

Look also this, in Finnish:

See the link in Materiaalit in Finnish the table that tells the connection between the old and new program. As said above, I can accept even 12 credits if someone will do much.

The options (ii), (iii) and (iv) of the course give the opportunity to qualify for the Master of European Official Statistics (EMOS), see more details. It is not mandatory to include this part in the course, thus you can learn survey methodology for all other purposes in your studies. Note that the survey has a big role in societies and in almost all sciences. You see everywhere survey results. All are not well done, since nonresponse has been increasing over 20-40 years. The sampling and other methods are also often poor, even so that self-selection of the respondents has been used using web/internet: it is easy but we cannot say anything about the quality. It is hard to say what happens in next decades. Qualified survey experts are any way needed more and more.

Now I have some text in Finnish: Nyt on kyseessä siis uudennäköinen kurssi mutta periaatteessa sama surveymetodiikan kurssi hieman lyhyempänä ilman ESS-osuuksia kuin ennen voidaan siinä samalla suorittaa. Maria on nytkin opettajana.

Yliopistollamme on oikeudet tutkinto antaa.

Tämähän on pakollinen yhteiskuntatilastotieteen linjalla.

Survey on kiehtova ja hauska alue ja kaikkia koskeva. TERVETULOA

Vuorovaikutus

The lectures thus are in English but we can use Finnish to some extent (your questions!). The training is possible both in Finnish and English. Emails are obviously sometimes used in communication. Please do not hesitate to ask and comment by email, at least.
Survey Methodology in Finnish is Surveymetodiikka, you can find my Finnish Free e-book from my University Website. In the end of the book is the vocabulary Finnish - English.

Aikataulu

You can choose your training time freely: Thursday Either 14:15-16:00 or 16:15-18:00.

Materiaalit

The course material will cover two cores:
- (i) Lectures that are both the Word files and also PPT's in their shorter forms. These will be uploaded here before each event (Wednesday 16:15)
- (ii) Training tasks that will be given before the training sessions (you can choose either Thursday 14:15-16:00 or Thursday 16:15-18:00, SSKH). Maria and me will help in your training so that it should be possible to prepare the report during these events (given that you are attending).
In addition, if you wish to make another report 'European Statistical System' (ESS), it will add your course value, and give more options for your future career. Note that the we use the data of the European Social Survey (ESS) in the first part of the training. It covers the basics of the other ESS. Thus: ESS means the two things, maybe surprisingly.

Tehtävät

This is template of the trainings

Save the template in your best folder and then start your report.
Itse laitan nämä z:n sopivaan sub-folderiin mutta voihan kaiken laittaa vaikkapa tikullekin lisäksi.

First four tasks

The number of tasks will be increased every week.
