Introduction to Solid Earth Geophysics FYS2077 recommended
Applied Geophysics GEOM_S2011 (compulsory for Solid Earth Geophysics study track), Petrophysics GEOM_S2014 (compulsory for Solid Earth Geophysics study track), Ground Penetrating Radar GEOM_S2031, Seismic Structural Studies GEOM_S2073.
The students learn to make geophysical field measurements, and do basic data processing and interpretation in practice.
Academic skills practiced during the course include (1) self-steering and self-management through working on a course report; (2) communication and interaction through giving an in-class presentation in pairs/groups, through discussions during the contact meetings and through writing a course report; (3) scientific thinking and problem solving through acquiring and interpreting geophysical measurement data from the target site; (4) recognizing ones own expertise through acquiring practical skills with equipment and software that is broadly used also in the industry sector, and through learning to write a report on a field survey.
The recommended time for completion is in the first fall of Master's studies.
A couple of contact meetings during period IV followed by an intensive week after period IV, every year.
The course covers gravity, magnetic, seismic, electrical and electromagnetic methods, and petrophysical sampling.

Student activities: Field teaching on how to operate state-of-the-art geophysical equipment forms the core content of the course. During the intensive field week, the collected data is also processed during computer exercise sessions, and interpretation is discussed. Students write a report on the data acquisition, processing and interpretation and give presentations in groups/pairs.
Description of how the teacher’s activities are documented: Lecture notes and other course materials are available through the course Moodle page. Course assignments are returned through Moodle, where the teachers will provide comments on the assignments. Course feedback is collected at the end of the course.
The course is graded on a scale 0-5/5. 70% of the final grade s based on a report on the acquisition, processing and interpretation of the collected data. The report is returned in mid-June. 30% of the final grade is based on a group/pair presentation during the intensive field week.
Mandatory (100%) attendance during the intensive field teaching week (5 days) at the Lammi Biological Station. The intensive week contains short lectures on the theoretical bases of the methods, field teaching with geophysical equipment and computer exercise sessions to process the collected data. On the final day of the intensive week, the students give short presentations on the data acquisition and processing procedures in groups/pairs. Additionally, before the intensive week, there are contact meetings (6 h) at Kumpula to get familiar with the field survey site, and to start preparing the student presentations & writing of the final report. During and after the intensive field week, the students finalize their reports on the acquisition, processing and interpretation of the course data. The report is due in mid-June.
