Synthetic chemistry course block

The course is available to students from other degree programmes

B.Sc. in chemistry is required.

It is recommended after the course Synthesis methods (KEM322).

After the course the student should be able to


  • do a retrosynthetic analysis on organic molecules


  • plan synthesis route or routes on the basis of retrosynthetic analysis
  • analyze the feasibility of synthetic routes

Good knowledge from Organic chemistry II course. Synthetic methods course is beneficial.

The course will be offered every year in IV period.

The focus in course is to learn to use and apply retrosynthetic analysis. In addition to lectures there is plenty of retrosynthetic analysis in form of drawing on white board, paper and home exercise. Flowing performance of course necessitates good knowledge of basic synthetic methods in organic chemistry, i.e. Clayden, Greeves, Warren and Wothers, Organic Chemistry book gives solid basis for the course. Course covers main principles and concepts of synthetic design, for instance criteria of meaningful disconnection and matter of control in the design. The primary stress is in different C-C disconnections, in related exploitation and production of functional groups. Classic synthetic methods such as Mannich reaction, enamine synthesis, Aldol condensation, Diels-Alder reaction and Friedel Crafts reactions are frequently appearing in the course material among other basic organic reactions.

In the lectures there is commonly an introduction discourse about a specific topic and thereafter related exercises presented by the students. Participation on the lectures is optional, exercises on the lectures compulsory. Successful performance in exam is possible with the course book knowledge. (Though this requires that one applies him/herself to the topic, to have some organic chemistry hobbyist)

It is recommended that students taking the Synthetic chemistry course block buy the book. However, Kumpula campus library has a few books.

The course is graded on standard scale 0-5.
