Controlled Release Drug Delivery Systems

The course focuses on nanomedicines used for biomedical applications, such as liposomes, mesoporous materials, polymeric nanoparticles, etc., problem-based learning exercises, and 2 experimental (lab) works. Part I – theoretical aspects, lectures (also from invited guests) and demos; Part II – lab work.

The scientific aims competences of the course are:

  • To introduce different nanomedicines.
  • To become familiar with production process of the different nanosystems.
  • To understand the importance of nanomedicines in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.
  • To introduce advanced techniques to produce nanomedicines.
  • To provide a basic understanding on how nanomedicines can be applied in for various diseases (e.g., cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases).
  • To become familiar with several examples of pharmaceutical and biomedical applications using such nanomedicines.
  • To develop technical skills in producing nanoparticles and testing, and drug release.

The learning outcomes of the course are:

  • To understand how nanomedicines can be tailored and used for biomedical purposes
  • To understand the problems and possibilities for drug delivery and target therapies
  • To be able to relate theory with practice, to describe, explain and discuss relevant topics on the field of nanomedicine.
  • To understand biomaterials and interaction of biomaterials with cells, body fluids and tissues.
  • To understand the proper design of nanosystems for biomedical application
  • To understand basic targeting strategies of nanomedicines for different therapies.
  • To understand the need, obstacles and solutions for polymeric and nanoporous drug delivery systems.
  • To understand the role of nanomedicines in theranostic applications.
  • To be aware of the toxicological aspects of nanosized surfaces and particles.
  • To value/appreciate laboratorial procedures.
  • To apply the theoretical knowledge from the lecture courses in practical experiments.
  • To become a good team member, to work collaboratively with the other students, and to improve scientific written and communication skills about nanomedicines.
  • To improve the research skills on nanomedicines and to apply the scientific techniques for own research.

The recommended time for completion is after getting basic knowledge in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Technology.

Spring term. To be held every year (if a minimum of 8 students are registered).

The aim of the course is to introduce to the students different nanomedicines pharmaceutical and biomedical applications, and to demonstrate their importance in, e.g., controlled drug release, precise and personalized therapy, and theranostics in cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (among many others), as well as to give an introductory overview of the production of different nanoparticles for biomedical and bio-imaging applications using different techniques. The course will introduce use of nanomedicines in therapy. In detail, the course will cover biomaterials, nanoparticles and encapsulation strategies. Methods and possibillities for drug delivery and nanoparticle fabrication and surface modifications. Use and design of nanoparticles for drug delivery and drug targeting. Physiological, cellular and toxicological aspects for medical use of nanomedicines. Theranostics, the combined use of in vivo imaging/diagnostics and therapy, as well as clinical aspects of nanomedicines. The course will have lectures and all students will perform two experimental works on preparation of nanoparticles and testing. Completion of the course requires full participation in the lectures, review the literature, describe current methods, consider and recommend use of emerging nanomedicines in a therapeutic setting. a scientific report together with a presentation on the experimental works, and solving problem-based learning exercises.

Grading scale 0-5. Completing the learning assignments and a multiple choice exam successfully is required for passing the course.

Maximum 20 students are accepted to the course. If needed, priority is given to the students of Faculty of Pharmacy. The responsible person will approve individual registrations.

The exact teaching times will be given later.

Lectures 20–30 h; problem-based learning exercises; laboratory demonstrations; 2 experimental (lab) works with reporting; and oral presentations.

Presence in the lectures required.

Lectures are held in English.
