Kuvaus

· The course is obligatory for those Society and Change Master students whose study direction is Development Studies.

· A certain number of students from international Master Programme of Contemporary Societies will be accepted to the course.

· If there is space, a certain number of Society and Change -Master students, whose study direction is something else than Development Studies will be accepted to the course.

· If there is space, maximum 5 students from the Master Programme of Environmental Change and Global Sustainability, study direction of Global Sustainability will be accepted to the course.

The course will give the opportunity to students to access and participate in debates in different topics that are relevant in development studies and international politics; to familiarize with institutions, researchers and policy-makers operating in this field especially in Finland, and worldwide; to reflect about theories, practices, policies, keywords etc., used in development discourses and North-South relations; to practice critical discourse analysis as a methodology to evaluate and use different communication and publication sources, different discourse styles, maps and visual tools; and to practice short academic writing.

Lectures will provide short overview of some fundamental approaches in development and will instruct on discourse analysis as a valid methodology in social constructionism and used to analyze political discourses in speeches and media coverage. A case study will be analyzed, using public speeches available in internet and other supporting reading, i.e. research articles and popular pieces, and also including images.

Specific thematic contents will change every year according to available events organized in Helsinki and freely accessible, in the areas of development and international cooperation, North-South geopolitics and international relations, etc.

Scale 0-5. In evaluation all the assignments will be considered, self-evaluation will be recommended.
