If you are completing DEFA (Digital Education For All) studies, Cyber Security Base: Introduction to Cyber Security is one of the courses that can be completed for application purposes; please see information in Finnish.
No specific prerequisites are needed. General understanding of computer systems and networks are recommended.
The course is the first part in series "Cyber Security Base". The series consists of 6 courses that can be grouped in two courses, each course rewarding 5 credits, 10 credits in total.
- Introduction to current status of cyber security
- Better understanding why cyber security is needed
- Technical aspects are discussed in more details in the following courses
This part of the course series will introduce the participant to the relevant issues in cyber security. These issues include the stakeholders' and users' ability to disrupt the functionality of a system; corporate responsibilities and liabilities; and the never-ending software crisis that is related to the increasing amount of software and maintenance.

Several external online materials (articles, videos) are used in the course. These links are specified in the course material.

Taking this course does not give students access to a University of Helsinki user account. If you want to view and share information about your studies after completing the course, sign up for the Oma Opintopolku -service maintained by the Finnish National Agency for Education. The ECTS will be displayed within two days in the Oma Opintopolku -service after credits have been registered to the University of Helsinki. To register for the Oma Opintopolku – service you must identify yourself by using Finnish bank identification codes, mobile certificate or certificate card.
