The course is optional in the MA Area and Cultural Studies in study tracks other than the Asian Studies track. In the Asian Studies track, one course of Asian Politics is compulsory.
The course is available to students from other degree programmes.
There are no prerequisites for this course.
The course is part of the Asian Studies track. It also complements the Joint courses Society, Power, and Communication, and Ideas, Ideologies, and Religion.
Upon completion of this study, students should be able to do the following:
- Identify key contemporary political developments in Asian countries
- Critically analyze democratic transitions and the survival of non-democratic regimes in Asian countries
- Critically analyze civil societies and their interactions with governments in Asian countries
- Apply theories to examine identity conflicts of ethnicity, religion and language in Asian countries
- Apply theories to examine the rise of China and India
This course will lead students to apply mainstream social science theories to examine contemporary political developments in Asian politics. Topical issues such as the rise of China and India, democratic transitions, survival of non-democratic regimes, civil societies, and ethnic conflicts will be highlighted. Concepts, theories and methods of sub-disciplines such as comparative politics, International Relations (IR), sociologies, political sciences and anthropology will be introduced to examine empirical cases in Asian countries.
During course
Standard lectures, case studies, role-play, and in-class exercises. All activities and materials will be placed on Moodle.
Usual University of Helsinki grading scheme from 0 to 5. Students will be evaluated based on their class attendance and participation, case studies, exams, and team presentations.
The course is organized in co-operation with the ALKU. ALKU arranges the course in which the Open University students attend (max 5 students). They registrate themselves via Open University's study programme (Enrol).
