How is our data used? Who is responsible for decisions made by machines? How to use facial recognition ethically?

This course will help you understand what ethical use of artificial intelligence means and what it demands from societies and individuals. On the course, you will approach practical questions through real life cases. There are seven chapters that consist of reading materials and assignments.

The course has been created in cooperation with the cities of Amsterdam, Helsinki, and London, and the Finnish Ministry of Finance.

Anmälning och avgift

Free of charge.

No enrollment before the course begins. You will be instructed to enroll on the course through the Open University after you have completed assignments in the MOOC learning environment.

  1. Complete the assignments in the MOOC online learning environment.
    • No course enrollment is required.
    • Course materials (without ECTS) are available for everyone without officially enrolling on the course.
  2. Once you have completed course assignments, you will be sent Open University enrollment instructions through email. Open University enrollment is required for ECTS credits. The ECTS are entered in the University of Helsinki’s student records.
    • Enrollment at the Open University ends 31 Aug 2021.

In order to enroll electronically you will need to meet one of the following criteria:
A. You have a university of Helsinki user ID.
B. You have a user ID at a HAKA federation member institution.
C. You have Finnish personal indentity number.

  • July 2021 course completetions will be registered in August 2021.

The course is suitable for

  • anyone interested in ethical questions related to artificial intelligence
  • students in any study programme

No particular computer science background is required, but it is recommended that you are familiar with basic concepts such machine learning. For a good introduction to artificial intelligence, the course Elements of AI (AYTKT21028en) is recommended.

There are no prerequisites for the course. Elements of AI (AYTKT21028en) is recommended as a good introduction to artificial intelligence.

After the course you

  • understand the role of ethical thinking in the planning and implementation of AI systems,
  • can describe different ethical aspects and considerations of AI,
  • can analyze the risks and opportunities of AI solutions from an ethical perspective,
  • can detect when ethical considerations are needed in AI solution implementation,
  • can follow the ethical discussions in public and in expert communities,
  • know the existence of ethical guidelines and are able to apply them in straightforward cases, and
  • understand when the ethical issue requires additional expertise.

The course content consists of text, visual and interactive elements that are available online. Links to additional, optional readings are provided in the material.

Grading is pass/fail.

Passing the course requires successful completion of the exercises in the MOOC online learning environment. Criteria for passing are defined and described in the learning environment.

Questions regarding the course:

  • The course is completed online (fully distance learning) and there are no attendance requirements.
  • The course is completed by doing exercises. All the exercises are automatically or peer graded. There is no exam.
  • The detailed criteria for passing the course are described in the MOOC online learning environment.
