Compulsory for students specializing in geoinformatics, optional for students in other study lines of geography.

Geography programme is responsible for the course


The course is available to students from other degree programmes, but the number of students may be limited. Priority is given first to students specializing in geoinformatics, then geography and then students of other degree programmes.

Automating GIS processes, Remote Sensing 1

Introduction to advanced geoinformatics course provides the students: 1) understanding of the analysis process and methods in geoinformatics; 2) new analytical skills to analyse vector and raster data: from network analyses to raster analytics; 3) understanding of the concepts of spatial statistics; 4) familiarity with visualization techniques and understanding of the importance of visualisation; 5) general knowledge on the research on the field.

The recommended time for completion is in 1. year of M.Sc. Studies

The course is offered in springerm, period 3

The main goal of the course is to introduce the students to advanced geoinformatics, with special emphasis on spatial analyses. During the course many examples about the applications of these methods on the practical societal and environmental questions will be presented. The course contents are 1. spatial analysis as a process, 2. data exploration and data quality, 3. spatial statistics 4. raster analyses, 5. network and location analyses, 6. visualization in different media, 7. current research topics on geoinformatics

The course is organized in a lecture + exercise session + journal club format. The lectures, exercise sessions and journal clubs are organized weekly. The exercise sessions allow students to practice and develop their skills in geoinformatics and receive help from course assistants, while the journal club helps to get familiar with the relevant literature.

There will be an exam at the end of the course about the lecture and literature content of the course. The students will make a final report of the course including a short description of each exercise and a report of the final exercise which is carried out applying the knowledge gained during the course. Journal club discussions are reported separately. The course is demanding, so students are advised to reserve 10-15 hours for its completion every week, plus the time for the final exercise. Evaluation and feedback will follow within four weeks after receiving the final assignments.

The course is evaluated on the scale 1-5 for those passing the course. The evaluation of students will be based on their performance in the exam (30%) and the exercise report (40%) and the journal club report (30%).

Lectures (14 h) and guided practical exercises (28 h), participation in a journal club every week, an individual final work and an exam.
