Beskrivning

Master’s Programme in Geology and Geophysics is responsible for the course.

Compulsory course, Petrology course package.

The course is not available to students from other degree programmes.

B.Sc. level petrology courses, rudimentary physical chemistry

Igneous petrology project GEOM_P2022, Petrology of basalts and the mantle GEOM_P2044, Granite petrology

The course will provide the student with indepth undestanding of igneous processes, based on the chemical equilibrium and kinetics. After completion, the student will have a comprehensive perception of how magmatism on Earth works and will be able to conduct graduate- and postgraduate-level research on igneous systems

The recommended time for completion is in the first year of Master's studies, commence after completing Isotope Geochemistry GEOM_1002.

The course is offered every year in period II.

Brush-up of modern concepts of thermodynamics and kinetics as applied to igneous systems, silicate melt and volatiles, crystal-melt equilibrium, crystal melt kinetics, magma body dynamics, magma transport and emplacement, magma generation and differentiation (lectures and pertinent thin section labs)

Learning diary (25%), thin section labs (25%) final examination (50%); 1-5/5, i

Contact teaching only. 75% attendance at lectures, filing due learning diaries, and completion of associated thin section set mandatory. Completion scheme: learning diary, optical petrography lab, final examination.
