Course is belonging to Chemistry and Molecular Science master program.

Course is compulsory in the analysis and separation methods module.

Master level course available also to students from other degree programmes.

Knowledge of separation techniques (gas and liquid chromatography). Course instrumental analysis is preferred.

Mass spectrometry in atmospheric sciences and environmental analysis. KEM 333 Analytical chemistry laboratory works.

Student will know:

  • the role and importance of vacuum system in MS and the most common vacuum pumps and their operation principles
  • different ways to introduce sample into MS and interfacing it to different separation techniques
  • common ionization techniques operated under the vacuum and at atmospheric pressure, and parameters affecting the ionization in each case
  • various desorption techniques associated with sample ionization
  • for what kind of compounds can certain ionization technique applied for
  • different mass analyzers, their operation and performance
  • some combinations of different analyzers that are used in MS
  • difference between scanning and selected ion monitoring (SIM)
  • how to define mass resolution and benefits of using high resolution MS
  • when and how to use tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS)
  • what kind of detectors are used in MS and their operation principles
  • why MS instruments need to be calibrated (tuned) and how it can be done
  • how to do basic electron impact and electrospray spectral interpretation

First or second year of the master studies.

Spring term, period 3.

Basics of different mass spectrometric (MS) techniques and methods are explained including chemical information that can be obtained with these. Instrumentation needed for different MS systems are described in detail (vacuum systems, ionization methods, mass analyzers and detectors). Direct sample introduction, combined desorption and ionization (ambient mass spectrometry), and introduction of sample via separation instrument (gas chromatograph, liquid chromatograph or electrophoresis) to MS are well covered. Parameters related to different techniques, qualitative and quantitative MS analysis, MS-MS analysis and possible applications achievable with different MS techniques are also topics that are studied. In addition, handling and interpretation of mass spectral data (electron impact and electrospray) is given.
