In this course students will think about how heritage is constructed, where power lies and how heritage can be marginalised.

Cultural heritage is often viewed as a positive thing – something that contributes to cultural identity and to the economy through tourism opportunities. However, some heritage is contested and difficult for groups to reconcile. Some forms of heritage are politically difficult for authorities to sanction. Not all memories are positive ones. In this course students will think about how heritage is constructed, where power lies in deciding the importance of certain kinds of heritage, and how heritage is also sometimes marginalized or even forgotten about. Through discussing key theoretical concepts employed in cultural heritage studies and through examining case studies, students will learn to think critically about how cultural heritage is utilized.

The course is conducted through lectures and seminars, with assigned reading and assessed tasks to complete.

Group presentations 20%, Case Study 20%, Essay 60%

Group Presentation – 20%
In designated groups, prepare a presentation (length to be confirmed later, dependent on number of students enrolled in the course) on a commemorative site known to you (for example, a war memorial, monument to a famous person, etc). In your presentation you should include the following:
1. Summary and description of the commemorative site
2. Analysis of why it was erected
3. Consideration of which groups of society are being remembered
4. Consideration of which groups of society are being ignored/marginalized/forgotten in the context of the commemorative site.

Case Study – 20%
Based on your group presentation, write up the example commemorative site your group chose as a case study document. The text should reference the relevant literature, and particularly refer to themes brought up in cultural heritage studies literature. You should write the case study as a group, and it should be no more than 1000 words in length, excluding the bibliography.

Essay – 60%
Write an essay on the following theme: “How do societies decide what heritage to remember and celebrate, and what heritage to downplay or ignore? What are the different processes at play?”
Use examples in your answer and refer to the literature from the course and from further reading that you are able to find. The essay should be 2500-3000 words in length, excluding the bibliography.

Presentations deadline 13.12, case study deadline 17.12, essay deadline 21.12. As the deadlines are all close to each other, please make sure you allow yourself enough time to complete each assignment. It is advisable to start working on your assignments already at the very beginning of the course.


Students taking KUMA-KP500 take this as part of their core courses, students taking KUMA-MU500 courses can take this as one of their optional courses instead of KUMA-MU503 or KUMA-MU512. Students completing the old "perusopinnot" in cultural heritage studies can take this course earn credits for that.

Opiskelija osaa selittää muistipolitiikan tutkimuksen käsitteitä sekä jäsentää niiden avulla kulttuuriperintöilmiöitä. Hän arvioi muistipoliittisten tekojen vaikuttimia ja vaikutuksia.

Menneisyyden muistamisella ja unohtamisella on vaikutusta yhteiskunnallisiin olosuhteisiin ja sosiaalisiin siteisiin. Opintojakso luo katsauksen muistitutkimukseen, sen teorioihin sekä sovelluksiin. Se auttaa ymmärtämään, kuinka kulttuuriperintö on yhteisöllisten muistiprosessien muoto, joka konkretisoituu muistiorganisaatioissa sekä epävirallisemmissa ilmenemistavoissa.

Opintojaksoon sisältyy oheislukemisto, joka ilmoitetaan opintojakson aikana.

Arvointi asteikolla 0 - 5. Arvioinnissa painotetaan kirjallista lopputehtävää, jossa odotetaan muistitutkimuksen ja kulttuuriperinnön tutkimuksen kytkemistä toisiinsa sekä soveltamista yksittäisten kulttuuriperintöilmiöiden analysoimisessa.

Opintojakso toteutaan lähiopetuksena. Se koostuu luennoista ja keskusteluista, joihin opiskelijan odotetaan aktiivisesti osallistuvan. Opintojaksoon sisältyy oheislukemisto, joka ilmoitetaan opintojakson aikana. Lopputyönään opiskelija laatii esseen tai muun kirjallisen tehtävän.
