Master's Programme in Materials Research is responsible for the course.

Module where the course belong to:

  • MATR300 Advanced Studies in Materials Research.
    Optional for:
    1. Study Track in Experimental Materials Physics
    2. Study Track in Inorganic Materials Chemistry

The course is available to students from other degree programmes.

B.Sc. in some field of natural sciences

After the course the student will be able to:

  • summarise and explain the basic physics of synchrotron radiation,
  • compare the performance of synchrotron radiation with other X-ray sources and identify their advantages/disadvantages,
  • describe the experimental methods and measurement techniques accessible in synchrotron radiation,
  • identify the suitable methods and techniques to study biological, chemical and physical properties of materials,
  • design a project for materials science, biology, physics or chemistry research using synchrotron radiation.

The recommended time/stage of studies for completion: any time

The course is offered every year in the period I.

  • X-rays and their interaction with matter
  • Light sources
  • Refraction and reflection from interfaces
  • Kinematic scattering
  • Diffraction by perfect crystals
  • Photoelectric absorption and related methods (photoemission, XANES, EXAFS, etc.)
  • Non-resonant and resonant inelastic scattering
  • X-ray imaging
  • New and hot topics & methods
