Beskrivning

1. Students of Master’s Programmes in Neuroscience and Translational Medicine, and Doctoral Programme Brain & Mind.

2. Other MSc students and doctoral candidates interested in mechanisms underlying nervous system diseases

Maximum number of participants: 40

Students attending this course should have basic knowledge of neurotransmitter systems and neuropharmacology. It is recommended to have taken the course “Basic mechanisms of nervous system diseases”.

After completion of the course, the student

  • knows the most common pre-clinical models of neurological diseases and can evaluate them by their strengths and weaknesses
  • has the current understanding of the mechanisms leading to disease pathology and understands how this knowledge has been achieved from studies using the pre-clinical models of the selected neurological diseases
  • knows the basic mechanisms of the current treatments
  • knows the emerging therapies and basics on how they proceed from research to clinic

Period III/IV

Understanding the mechanisms and the progressive pathology of the neurological diseases is the basis for developing new treatments to them. Different research models (in vivo and in vitro) enable us to study these mechanisms and test the effectiveness and safety of the new treatments. Neurological diseases are extremely complex and currently we are mostly only able to treat the symptoms, no cures exist. Many exciting new treatments are emerging, though the path from the pre-clinical research to clinical trials is long and expensive. This course presents the current state of research and drug development for the most common neurological disorders.

The course consists of lectures (appr. 15 h), group work on problem-based learning cases and student presentations (appr. 80 h) and independent studying (appr. 40h). To complete the course, the students need to actively take part in lectures and group work (80%), and pass the final exam.

Selected scientific reviews and papers on the discussed topics will serve as the study material.

Grading of the course (0-5) is based on evaluation of the group work and presentations (25%) and the final examination based on lectures and indicated review articles (75%). Criteria for evaluation will be available in the Moodle.
