One 20th century author of a master narrative on Christian-Muslim relations in the Middle Ages described Islam as the “biggest challenge for Christianity” in medieval times. The new and expanding religion aroused many questions within the Latin-Christian Church and had a deep impact on the self-understanding and world views of Christian communities. The aim of the course is to explore the complex relationship between Christians and Muslims throughout the Middle Ages and discuss its historiography and legacy until modern times. By analysing selected sources mainly from the 8th to the 16th century (e.g. chronicles, travel reports, religious tractates, images, monuments), the students will examine the origin and changing images of Islam seen through the lenses of Western Christianity. They will reflect of how and for what purposes distorted images of the Prophet of Muhammad and Muslim customs were outlined over time and contributed to the ‘orientalization’ of the Orient. They will understand the different – not only negative – images of the rival religions in the medieval culture by approaching the functions of more positive images such as the noble heathen as well as the interfaith dialogue in situations of everyday life. In fact, key words like coexistence, pragmatic tolerance, hybridity and transmission of knowledge point to the permeability of cultural borders beyond the definition of the relationship as a hostile and violent ‘clash of civilisations’. As a result, the course will lead to a general reflection on concepts of the ‘Self’ and ‘Other’, uses of the past and processes of shaping cultural identities and collective memories. Lastly, the legacy of medieval Christian-Muslim relations will be discussed by focusing on recent historiographical writings, novels, modern mass media and social media platforms.

– kontaktiopetusta kristinuskon maantieteellisestä etenemisestä (10–20 tuntia); tähän liittyviä opintokäyntejä ja kirjallisuuden esittelyä

– itsenäistä/parityöskentelyä: maantieteellisen miljöön vaikutus kirkkojen kehitykseen menneisyydessä, nykypäivään suhteuttaen annettujen kysymysten avulla (5-6 sivua)

– tehtävien purkaminen ja opettajan kommentit (noin 4 tuntia)
